Imagine that you just bought a new car. On the day you launch it, you are very excited about your new vehicle, so much so that you drive around the city, you wash it every day and take care of the smallest detail so that it always looks impeccable.
Little by little, with the passage of days and weeks, the initial emotion is disappearing and you realize that having a car involves much more than taking care of and managing it.
In addition to washing and cleaning it, it is necessary to take care of the tires (and buy when necessary), to carry out the necessary registration procedures, to process plates, to fix any mechanical problems that arise, to take it to check every time and many other activities.
Maintaining a car takes time and effort. The same is true with WordPress!
When we launch a blog or website, we also feel motivated and excited. We take care of all the details and we are aware that it works well at all times.
And as with a car, over time we realize that we also have to perform different maintenance tasks so that you can have optimum performance, design and can meet the established objectives.
What are these tasks?
1. Choose a quality theme
The first tip WordPress is related to Web design. Choosing a theme or template is one of the most important decisions when creating a website or blog.
The choice goes far beyond appearance, since a good design provides security, structure, fast loading and great performance, which translates into many benefits.
Your theme will depend largely on the purpose and type of site you want to create. Surf the internet and find the design that best suits what you need.
There are free themes and premium themes. Premiums generally offer better support, design, options and higher standards.
2. Install necessary and adequate plugins
Plugins are one of the main engines of WordPress and its excellent operation. There are plugins for all kinds of needs, which is why we must be careful when choosing them.
There are “universal” plugins that work for all types of sites, regardless of category or niche. These work for aspects like optimization SEO, security, eliminate SPAM, improvements in the speed of load, etc.
There are also others that help meet more specific needs. For example: e-commerce, membership creation, sales, integration of other software, social networks and much more.
It is always best to install secure, reputable, secure and well-programmed plugins. Much is said about the danger of installing too many plugins, however, it affects much more poor quality plugins than the excess itself.
Try to find a good balance between the quantity and quality of plugins you install, because too many may be able to slow down your site. It all depends on many things, that is why it is good to take care of all aspects of WordPress.
3. Protects the platform
Security is another of the pillars of WordPress and the best habits that you can develop in the general maintenance of your site. Many times we trust because we think that something will never happen.
However, for many the day arrives. We try to login to our WordPress desktop and … .. Surprise!
We have hacked, our site is down, there are server problems, information is lost, the blog is full of malware or any other similar problem.
What to do before these types of scenarios?
If there is no backup or prevention, it is very likely that much information will be lost and it will have to be done EVERY time. In addition to hours and hours of frustration accompanied by extra work.
However, if from the beginning is protected WordPress, at first these types of scenarios would not happen. And if yes, they would have backups of all the information, posts, entries and database to solve the problem to reload the information and thus save many headaches and dawn work.
With WordPress we have access to plugins that protect the platform and create automatic backups every time.
4. Constant updating
With every update of WordPress coming out come important features of design, performance, functionality and security. That’s why it’s best to always upgrade quickly to the latest versions of the platform.
This tip also includes themes and plugins, which are often also constantly improving and optimized.
An updated installation helps make everything work better.
With the term cleaning I mean at every given time to maintain the platform, eliminate things that are not needed and that may be taking up space or affecting the performance of the site in some way.
This covers both plugins, themes, widgets and even content.
It is possible that for a while we need a plugin temporarily. When finished using it, there is no case to have it installed and activated, the same with the widgets that we added in the different sidebars of the blog.
Check in your WordPress installation what it is that you do not use. For example, if you are releasing a new template or layout, it is good to delete the previous one. It’s no use having it installed and can even be a security vulnerability.
6. Updating content and sections
Depending on the type of site you have and the topic, it is possible that the content you publish needs to be reviewed and updated at some point. For example, in my case I have a blog about WordPress, every time a new version of the platform comes out I check my published content and see what it is that I can update that includes within the updates of the update.
In the same way it can happen in your industry or niche.
Also if there is any important news and that has a strong impact on your market, do not hesitate to publish information about it. This will show relevancy, authority and that your blog is always updated with the latest information – extra points for Google and SEO – If any section of your blog has become unimportant for any reason, update it or delete it.
6. Take advantage of Google tools
Google cares a lot for each Webmaster (and we thank you forever :)). That’s why it puts at our disposal a lot of tools that we can take advantage to get the most out of WordPress and our online productivity.
Here are some of my favorite tools that I use frequently:
The search engine – With a good positioning and SEO strategy, the search engine can be turned into a traffic generator
Google Analytics – To review how many people visit our site, where they come from, the language they speak, device they use, behavior, time on site, and much much more.
Google Webmaster Tools – Tools that help us monitor the performance of a website or blog in Google’s organic results, detect any type of error, suggestions for improvements, searches for which traffic arrives and more.
Gmail – Although in general it does not work directly with WordPress, Gmail is in my opinion the best email service available.
Google Drive – Excellent service for creating and editing documents. I use it to write all my posts and content from WordPress sites.
Google trends – Discover trends, topics and most searched terms in your niche by date. Very good to get ideas for content.
Google Keyword planner – To do market research and keywords. Useful for SEO and advertising.
Google Calendar – To plan and set important dates.
Youtube – Upload your videos and generate traffic to WordPress
These and more are the tools offered by Google for business on the Internet. I recommend using them every day to be more productive and effective in your daily activities.
They can make a big difference in your results and facilitate the maintenance of WordPress.
7. Go to next level
This is one of the best WordPress tips and one that you always have to look for put into practice. Never settle for what you have. You can always progress and move to a higher level in every aspect of WordPress.
If you already have several months or years with the same design, why not try a new theme with different or more advanced functions?
Investigate new plugins and tools that will allow you to increase effectiveness and achieve better results in less time.
For example, you might be using subscription forms provided by Mailchimp.
Moving to the next level would be to use exceptional subscription forms with excellent design; For that there are some plugins like Optinskin or OptinMonster, which offer quality templates, advanced functions and much more.
